Twenty devotional rules

Shri Hit Premanand Govind Sharan Ji Maharaj shares 20 essential principles from the teachings of Shri Udiya Baba Ji for a seeker (sadhak) to deepen their devotion and progress on the spiritual path (3:55):

1. Speak the truth: Always prioritize honesty over fear (4:39).

2. Avoid criticism: Never criticize others, especially saints or devotees, as it depletes one's own spiritual merit (5:24).

3. Maintain equanimity: Do not become overly excited by favorable circumstances or depressed by unfavorable ones (6:34).

4. Practice forgiveness: Forgive those who seek your pardon, even if they have committed offenses (9:01).

5. Keep sorrows private: Do not burden others with your personal suffering; instead, pray to God for the strength to endure it (10:13).

6. Foster benevolence: Maintain a spirit of service and kindness toward everyone, regardless of their behavior toward you (10:54).

7. See divine play: Do not view others' harmful actions as personal offenses, but rather as results of your past karma (11:27).

8. Continuous chanting: Never let go of the divine name, even while performing worldly duties (12:18).

9. Speak gently: Always use sweet, beneficial, and polite language (13:01).

10. Avoid harshness/profanity: Even when angry, refrain from using abusive or obscene language (13:48).

11. Do not gossip: If you must address someone's flaws, speak to them directly rather than complaining to others (14:25).

12. Use time wisely: Avoid wasting hours on useless worldly talk; dedicate time to spiritual discourse (14:57).

13. Earn righteously: Use only money earned through honest, ethical means (15:32).

14. Avoid idle habits: Do not waste time on futile activities like playing cards (16:17).

15. Eat mindfully: Consume simple, nutritious, and easily digestible food (16:59).

16. Keep spiritual experiences secret: Do not reveal your personal spiritual experiences to the general public (17:32).

17. Remain humble: Do not take pride in your devotional practices (18:03).

18. Respect everyone: Offer respect to all, while remaining free from the desire for respect yourself (18:43).

19. Hide your virtues: Do not display your divine qualities or spiritual progress (19:17).

20. Practice simplicity: Avoid unnecessary physical decoration, which can reinforce bodily ego (20:14).
